"Richly deserved": Garry Lyon inducted into AFL HoF
In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the game both on and off the field, SEN Breakfast’s Garry Lyon has been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Celebrating individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact on AFL, Lyon joins a long list of legends selected for their excellence, integrity and influence across playing, coaching, umpiring or media roles.
Lyon’s football legacy is etched into the history of the Melbourne Football Club and the AFL.
A powerful and inspirational forward, Lyon played 226 games and kicked 426 goals for Melbourne between 1986 and 1999. He captained the club from 1991 to 1997 - the longest-serving captain in Melbourne’s history at the time - and was a five-time All-Australian, two-time club best and fairest, and a member of Melbourne’s Team of the Century.
Since retiring, Lyon has become one of the most respected voices in AFL media.
His insightful commentary and deep understanding of the game have made him a mainstay on television, radio and in print.
Lyon’s SEN Breakfast co-host Tim Watson paid tribute to his on-air partner following the richly deserved recognition.
“He was not only a great player for Melbourne, but also a great leader - and often through tough tumultuous times,” Watson said. “He was also a proud and great State player, standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the game’s finest.
“Beyond his playing days he has carved out a football media career that has seen him become one of the game’s most authoritative voices, and it is a privilege for me to work with him in that capacity on SEN.”
SEN CEO, Craig Hutchison congratulated Lyon.
“Garry’s induction into the AFL Hall of Fame is long overdue and richly deserved. He has been a giant of the game — as a player, a leader, and now as a broadcaster. We are incredibly proud to have Garry as part of the SEN family, and congratulate him on this prestigious honour.”
