Just when you thought the furore surrounding Jason Horne-Francis and Ken Hinkley was the biggest moment of Port Adelaide’s clash with North Melbourne, spare a thought for a young lady called Hope.
As with every Port home game, the club’s dating service called Perfect Pear campaign was all set to go.
Inspired by shows like MAFS, the match-day experience is all about helping supporters find love. A pair is introduced before the game, shown to the crowd on the big screen before enjoying a corporate box for the duration.
At three quarter time the crowd “checks in” on the couple to see if a second date is on the cards.
Only things at the weekend didn’t go to plan.
“I was sitting next to the Perfect Pear contestant when I saw JHF have a crack at Simpkin,” Port Adelaide MC Jarrod Walsh said on SEN SA Breakfast this morning.
“Perfect Pear, my goodness, two things happened.
“First of all the guy rocked up late so we had to shift the whole pre-match introduction, because he was late. Safe to say he had had a pretty solid Saturday morning at the casino.
“A little under the weather? He was a lot under the weather. We had to pull the pin.
“We set the person up, her name was Hope and she had no hope in the end.
“I thought he was gonna a have a Chris Mew.
“I had to go up (to Hope) at three-quarter time and say sorry your date's not here, we will give you all your packs and wish her all the best.”
Even the Port players noticed something was off.
“Ollie Wines comes up and says what happened to Perfect Pear the guy didn’t show up?”
