The mid-season rookie draft is fast approaching and there are a few interesting names in the mix.
According to AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich, Southport’s Brayden Crossley is on Essendon’s radar as the Bombers look for some relief in the ruck.
Also under AFL consideration is Werribee ruckman Sam Conway, the elder brother of Geelong’s Toby, and Liam McMahon who is again dominating for Carlton’s VFL team.
McMahon, who was on Collingwood’s list in 2021 and 2022, has kicked 22 goals in six VFL outings in 2025 and is also being watched by the Bombers.
“A lot of mature-age players were taken last year. Look at Sam Davidson and Riley Bice that were taken in the national draft,” Gabelich said on SEN Fireball.
“Just keep an eye on Brayden Crossley because we know Essendon needs backup. He’s not the only ruckman that might get an opportunity.
“Toby Conway has got a brother who is starring at Werribee. His name is Sam Conway and he’s going really well.
“Liam McMahon is kicking goals for fun in the VFL. Another four on the weekend.
“He trialled at Carlton across the pre-season, Essendon have had some interest in him, he had a couple of years on Collingwood’s list a few years ago.
“He is putting his hand up for a second opportunity.”
McMahon has starred at VFL level since his delisting by the Magpies in 2022. He kicked 45 goals in 16 games to win the Blues’ best and fairest in 2024.
Last year there were 19 players who were selected in the mid-season draft, highlighted by Collingwood’s Ned Long who was taken with Pick 19.
The 2025 mid-season draft takes place on Wednesday, May 28.
