It’s been a forgettable 2025 for the West Coast Eagles.
Just one win in the home and away season saw them firmly anchored to the bottom of the AFL ladder for much of the 23 rounds.
With the season over, Scott Cummings and Tim Gossage have run the rule over every Eagle and rated their respective seasons.
BO ALLAN
Scotty: C-
"Not his fault, though, and I think he's going to be a star."
Goss: C-
"He was Pick 16. He didn't live up to expectation. He's had a terrible run out of this year through just being unwell.
"He was sick early, copped a couple of injuries, but given the chances he got given at certain times, I don't think he grasped him.
"He needs a big pre-season. He needs a trouble-free run. But I can't really mark him better."
OSCAR ALLEN
Scotty: F
"Absolute F for everything he did this year.
"Most of it all stem back to the debacle of a personal meeting with an opposition coach after a massive Derby loss.
"Terrible captaincy, and proved us all right, and the fact that he's now asked to desert the ship.
"Terrible captaincy, terrible leadership and terrible teammate stuff."
Goss: C
"Played 12 games.
"Wasn't a great year for him, the Sam Mitchell thing, as you mentioned, and departing. But I think everyone needs a fresh change.
"I think the Eagles didn't do themselves any anything good out of all of that making well, they paraded him in a way. Basically told him what to say. And I think that was unfair."
LIAM BAKER
Scotty: A-
"I just don't think he could ask any more from that little bloke. Um, put his heart and soul out every weekend and led the team.
"He's a future captain. There's no doubt about that, and I think they're in good hands with him at the helm."
Goss: B+
"His kicking efficiencies, less than 60%.
"He turned the ball over way too much, but he you can't question his effort and his will, but certainly not an A."
RHETT BAZZO
Scotty: C-
"I don't think he's a fail.
"He's got himself back into the team, and I think he's just getting back into it again.
"And I think next year is the year, it will determine if he plays on, whether he gets another deal."
Goss: C
"Needs a massive preseason.
"Need to, need to clear run at it. At times he looks comfortable, and other times he looks like, fish out of water. Needs to get some, need some consistency."
SANDY BROCK
Scotty: C-
"I think he's fought pretty hard, and he's had to take on some of the big names and the big forwards in the game, and I think he's held his head."
Goss: B-
"I think he's got great effort.
"He's got great closing speed, but he sort of burns the footy a bit too much for my needs."
TYLER BROCKMAN
Scotty: C-
"He showed glimpses during the year, but again, expect more from him.
"It's time now for him to start taking his opportunities that he's getting. He's got a lot of midfield time.
"Again, another one that worries me. When the ball is not in his hand or in the Eagles hands."
Goss: B
"I like Tyler Brockman.
"I think, but they need to decide where they want to play him.
"Is he a mid forward or forward-mid?
"I think he's got skills in the midfield, and I think we're going to see more of him there. I don't think he was all that bad."
MALAKAI CHAMPION
Scotty: F
"Two games trying to find his way into this team.
"Hasn't been able to do it. It's not a good team to it's not a good team.
"So it's not, yeah, there's not brilliant players ahead of you. So an F for melancholy."
Goss: C-
"I’d like to see a bigger body of work."
CAMPBELL CHESSER
Scotty: C-
"Earlier in the year I would have written him off.
"But I reckon the last three or four (games), he’s shown a bit more."
Goss: B-
"I think there’s enough there to suggest he can play again.
"It is body of work. It's continuity, it's trouble free pre-season.
"I need to back himself in with some confidence. I think he can play."
TOM COLE
Scotty: C+
"I've given him a settled on a C plus.
"Fights hard, has a crack, plays on bigger, smaller."
Goss: B-
"What do you play?
"18 games, his experience.
"He's needed down there. He does give away far too many free kicks."
JAMIE CRIPPS
Scotty: C+
"I've got him 23 goals from his 20 games, two tackles a game.
Goss: B
"21 games, leading goal kicker.
"His experience is important.
"I don't think you'd be relied on to play nearly all the games next year. But I think in a very young team, you need some form of experience up."
HAMISH DAVIS
Scotty: C+
"Pick a position for him?"
Goss: B
"He's a tackling beast. I think he's a forward.
"They've got him playing wing, but I think he can mark the ball."
TYRELL DEWAR
Scotty: C-
"Shows glimpses.
"Showed enough that he could continue. Needs a big pre season."
Goss: B
"His form dropped away late after getting injured. I think there's some upside for Tyrell Dewar.
"I just think he needs to find a spot again. They're square pegging and round holing at West Coast."
LIAM DUGGAN
Scotty: C
"I think he's a really good leader, Dungo.
"I really do kicking was the one that hurt the most for me. But again, fights hard."
Goss: B
"I think we should not underestimate how bad that knee was.
"I think he played through because if there was a lack of was a lack of leadership, I think if Oscar Allen and McGovern were around, I reckon they might have chosen to go to the surgery earlier.
"I think he's an important leader. If he's not Captain next year, you still should be in the leadership group."
HARRY EDWARDS
Scotty: C
"I think he plateaued, I think he plateaued this year, Harry Edwards again, possibly maybe backwards this year than he did last year.
"I thought he was on a trajectory last year. And I think he sort of plateaued."
Goss: B+
"He grew this year.
"He had to step up on the absence of McGovern and Barrass not being there.
"He got injured late in the end here. I thought he had a super year, and I think he's almost top five in their club champion."
MATT FLYNN
Scotty: C+
"His first half this season was average, but he's only got better.
"He's got much, much better as the season's gone on, and needs an injury free pre-season.
"And I think he could get himself into B plus."
Goss: B
"He was a warrior, got no real help in the ruck.
"You know, they had pinch hitters with a few others, the Jack Williams and the Archer Reid's. It didn't work.
"He went solo, and I thought he battled away nicely."
REUBEN GINBEY
Scotty: B+
"He battles his ass off. I think he's had a fantastic year.
"He's a victim late in games of the team dropping off and his forward forwards kick goals on him late, but needs to fix his ball drop as well.
"It's too high, and he gets caught because his ball drops too high."
Goss: A-
"He's got great courage.
"He's kicking is a bit of an issue, but you can't question his guts."
JACK GRAHAM
Scotty: B+
"Sets a standard.
"He's aggressive. 132 tackles, so many clear of the next person, I think he's been a fantastic addition."
Goss: B+
"Tackling beast, 50 more. Tackles than anyone else.
"They missed him for that month that he didn't play. I think he is a true leader, and I think he's been one of the great acquisitions that football club in the last decade."
TOM GROSS
Scotty: C-
Goss: C-
"Had no impact in his eight games."
CLAY HALL
Scotty: C-
"Shows great promise.
"Needs to get fitter and get more contested."
Goss: C+
"Kicking is an issue.
"Needs to find some leg speed. He handles the ball way too much."
ELIJAH HEWETT
Scotty: C+
"Shows plenty. I think he's going to be beauty. He's needs the biggest preseason of his life."
Goss: B
"I think he tapered off at the end of the year."
BRADY HOUGH
Scotty: B-
"New position, sacrificing for the sake of the team, trying to figure his way out there.
Goss: B+
"I think he's a defender, not a midfielder.
"A big and strong got great closing speed, love how he takes the game on."
JAYDEN HUNT
Scotty: C-
"Ditto, fell away really quickly."
Goss: C-
"Jayden Hunt's card got marked late in the year. He's now left the club."
JACK HUTCHINSON
Scotty: C
"Another one with positional experiments as well."
Goss: C
"Dropped away.
"I thought he was going to turn out to be a wonderful, promising, high marking, tall, quick midfielder. He didn't do any of that late in the year.
"Makes too many mistakes."
TIM KELLY
Scotty: C+
"When the ball is not in his hands, he's in a bit of trouble, but I think he has bounced back."
Goss: B
"Tim Kelly back to his best late in the season. The last three or four games, I really liked what he did.
"I think he's a midfielder and not a half forward."
NOAH LONG
Scotty C-
“10 games and there is a 33-year-old still ahead of him, and that’s your biggest problem.”
Goss C-
"He's not the same player since he's been injured.
"I worry about him, but I do trouble free preseason, he might be able to deliver."
RYAN MARIC
Scotty: C+
“The only problem there is his disposal lets him down…but that’s his strength, was his strength.”
Goss: B
“22 games as a wing defender.
“His disposal lets him down, but not his intent. I think he has come a long way.”
TOM MCCARTHY
Scotty: B+
“I don’t think I’ve seen a player picked in the mid-season draft who’s more ready.”
“He looks made for AFL football.”
Goss: B+
“Late arrival. 10 games. Back-mid.
“His kicking was his one wood, and his kicking is what brought him back to the field.”
JEREMY MCGOVERN
Scotty: B-
“He only gets a minus because he bailed out early, but not due to his own doing.”
Goss: B
“We now know, but just a big chunk out of it.
“But, you know, Gov was Gov when he was there."
JACOB NEWTON
Scotty: C-
“Based off a small sample size.”
Goss: F
“The story is nice, but I’m not sure.”
MATTHEW OWIES
Scotty: F
“He’s the most disappointing part of the season.”
“I expected so much better after a big season last year. Seven goals from 16 games.”
Goss: C-
“He’s kicked one goal in six after coming back from injury. Hasn’t been a great pick-up for them.
“He’s had a lot to do with the experience of the group, but sadly, on the field, it hasn’t worked.”
JACK PETRUCCELLE
Scotty: F
“Great bloke and he’s busted his butt.
“He’s done pretty well and has had a great career.”
Goss: F
ARCHER REID
Scotty: C+
“He’s going to be the future, there is no doubt about it,”
Goss: B-
“Five goals, ten (behinds),”
“(Can) pinch-hit in the ruck. I think he got passed by Shanahan. No injury probably curtailed it.
“He’s got a lot to grow.”
HARLEY REID
Scotty: B-
“He started really poorly because he wasn’t fit.
“But as the games went on, he got better, better and better.”
Goss: B+
“Gives away too many frees. Got to get that out of his game.”
LIAM RYAN
Scotty: C+
“He’s good when the ball is in his hand.
“And when it is not, then they are not going to miss.”
Goss: B
“23 goals, but he is on the way out.”
JOBE SHANAHAN
Scotty: B
“Four marks a game he took.
“He looks an absolute beauty in the making.
“Got to fix his goal kicking.”
Goss: B+
“12 goals, marks it at the highest point.
“He and Waterman as a duo next year are going to be exciting.”
JAKE WATERMAN
Scotty: B-
“Just because of the games he missed that curtailed him.
“But two goals a game is good enough for me.”
Goss: B
“Eight games. 17 goals in those games.
“They sadly missed him.”
BAILEY WILLIAMS
Scotty: C+
“I loved his competitiveness, I love his physicality.
“He’s got to fix his marking; He is this year’s Luke Jackson.
“He is a double grabber or not at all.”
Goss: B-
“He threatens, but he’s got to do more.
“But I do think there is something in there.”
JACK WILLIAMS
Scotty: C+
“I think he is just another one that has plateaued a little this year.
“(Has) a future ahead of him.”
Goss: C
“16 goals in 13 games.
“Shouldn’t be underestimated, but what is he?
“Is he a slow-moving forward or is he a back-up ruckman?”
