‘Dread time’: Geelong’s mind-blowing Champion Data scoring stat
There’s one key thing that Brisbane should be worried about ahead of Saturday’s Qualifying Final against Geelong, according to Champion Data… goals in time on.
In what Champion Data analyst Daniel Hoyne has described as ‘Dread Time’, Geelong have been able to score at will compared to their opposition once quarters tick over the 20-minute mark this season.
Comparing Geelong to the other top five teams when it comes to points differential in time on isn’t even a competition, with the Cats scoring almost three times more in this period of games compared to the next best.
Hoyne revealed and spoke about the mind-blowing stat on SEN Sportsday.
“If you’re playing against Geelong, you are dreading the time on period of quarters. The time on period is 20 minutes plus on the clock,” Hoyne explained on SEN Sportsday.
“So, in terms of points differential this year in time on of quarters for the whole season, these are the top five teams.
“GWS are fifth at +144 points, Adelaide are +155, Gold Coast are +158, and the Bulldogs are second with +166.
“Geelong… +422 points. They are 260 points better than any other team in time on!
“That is the fifth-best record in Champion Data's history.
“Do you know what's happened to the four better teams? Flag, flag, flag and the Cats in ’08 who stuffed it up.”

While Geelong’s scoring in ‘Dread Time’ was brilliant during the home and away season, it hasn’t slowed down in finals either, as Hoyne revealed that they smashed Brisbane in the Qualifying Final by 37 points during time on periods and Hawthorn in the Preliminary Final by 54.
They won those games by a respective 38 and 30 points…
“So, what they have done in their two finals… in ‘Dread time’?” Hoyne asked.
“In the Preliminary Final, they scored 56 points to 2. In Qualifying Final ‘Dread Time’, they scored 58 points to 21.
“We watch them on the outside and sit there all year watching them, and you think this is just amazing to watch.
“You look at this and go, how do you go with them?”
Geelong will hope to keep their high-scoring going late in quarters in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final against Brisbane. The bounce is set for 2:30 pm (AEST), listen LIVE on SEN.
