Who did the coaches miss in Round 12?
Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has assessed which players were overlooked in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.
See who the coaches missed below:
Sam Switkowski (Fremantle)
“They gave him 2 votes, but we had him as the highest-rated player on the ground,” Hoyne revealed on SEN's Sportsday.
“He is top 30 in the comp over the last 6 weeks.
“(Switkowski) has been a ratings player for us for a long time.
“Did you see his kick to Shai Bolton in the last quarter – so creative.
“Love what he does.”
Lachie Whitfield (GWS)
“(I) found this one really interesting.
“Didn’t get a vote from the coaches, fourth-highest rated player on the ground.
“But for the last week and a half, he’s been used in that mid forward role, and at half time (he was) thrown back behind the footy when things weren’t going well.
“What did he do in the second half?
“Highest-rated player on the ground.
“I think that’s probably where you will see Lachie play moving forward.”
Sam Berry (Adelaide)
“Didn’t get a vote from the coaches, fifth-highest rated player on the ground.
“No Crows player had more impact with how they won it, which I think is perfect for him, given what you’ve got around with (Jake) Soligo and (Izak) Rankine when he goes in there, and (Jordan) Dawson.
“I think he’s got a role to play with this footy club for the next 3-4 months in their finals campaign.”
Connor O’Sullivan (Geelong)
“Third-highest rated player on the ground, didn’t get a vote.
“11 contested possessions and 11 intercepts for Connor on the weekend.
“So, continues to put forward his case in the Rising Star award this year.”
Hoyne also revealed the round’s Most Damaging Player (MDP).
“Highest-rated player for the round was Hugh McCluggage,” Hoyne said.
“One of the better performances of his career with what he did against Essendon, and clearly having the best season of his career.
“I know you’re all over Lachie Neale and tag Lachie Neale, (but) you've seriously got to think about what you can do to this guy.”
