Postecoglou axed by Forest in record breaking time
In the space of just 39 days, Ange Postecoglou has been hired and now sacked as Nottingham Forest manager following a tumultuous period at the club.
Having taken over from Nuno Espírito Santo in September, the Australian was only in charge for eight games.
But in those matches, he failed to win in a single game with a three-nil defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground overnight, being the final straw for owner Evangelos Marinakis.
In a club statement, minutes after the match, it was confirmed that the 60-year-old's departure was performance-based: "Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect."
With this sacking, he now has the unwanted record of the shortest time in charge of a Premier League side, having beaten Les Reed's record by just one day.
Reaction has come swiftly since the news of his sacking broke.
Reacting on air as the news came in, NBC Sports commentator and former Middlesbrough player Robbie Mustoe felt that the decision was inevitable.
But he acknowledged that bringing in Postecoglou, whose high-intensity game plan is the complete opposite of Espírito Santo's counter-attacking style, was a mistake by the owner.
‘It was coming,” he said.
“You can’t go on losing games like that, expecting a change which is going to be a big change in style that would be successful, that might take weeks or months.
“The owner Marinakis has done a good job with this football club; they’re in the Premier League, they’re in the Europa League.
“But this decision, the whole Nuno thing and hiring a guy that is 180 (degrees) to that style of play, expecting that to work quickly, it has been a disaster, and this is no surprise.”
