Ponga out for home and away season with injury

Newcastle's Kalyn Ponga has been ruled out for the remainder of the home and away season following an injury sustained in Round 17.
Ponga would suffer a Lisfranc injury in the 60th minute of the Knights' Friday night clash against the Canberra Raiders, which saw him hobble off the field in agony.
It was already confirmed in the aftermath of that match that he would miss Game III for Queensland as a result of the injury, but now, he will miss the entire season unless Newcastle finds themselves in the finals.
This news consolidates what has already been a tough year for Newcastle supporters.
After just making finals last season, they now find themselves well adrift of that as they sit 13th on the ladder.
Speaking with CODE Sports, Ponga admitted that he was frustrated with the fact that he has likely played his last game for 2025.
“Obviously disappointing and gutted I’ll potentially miss out on the rest of the year, but it is what it is now,” he said.
Newcastle is among seven clubs who have the bye this week.
Their next match will be back at home in Round 19 when they play the Melbourne Storm on the 12th of July.
