“One of the great Shield final performances”: Shock as SA rout QLD for 95 in decider
South Australia have started the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield Final in brilliant fashion, bowling Queensland out for 95 at Karen Rolton Oval on Day 1.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the South Australians made early inroads, removing Usman Khawaja (2) and Marnus Labuschagne (0) before having the visitors reeling at 5/22.
While Michael Neser (34) was able to offer some late resistance with six boundaries to his name, it wasn’t enough for Queensland to reach triple figures as Brendan Doggett - a Queensland native - ran riot for South Australia with 6/31 from 11.5 overs.
He was supported by Nathan McAndrew (2/22) and Jordan Buckingham (1/11) as the quicks did the damage, and SEN Cricket’s Bharat Sundaresan was thrilled for the home side as they go in search of their first title since 1996.
“That will go down as one of the great performances in a Shield final,” Sundaresan said on SEN Cricket.
“Brendan Doggett, he knows what it is to win a Shield, but he's never done it with South Australia, who have not done it for 29 years.
“Nathan McSweeney won the toss, elected to field, but I don't think even he could have imagined this dream scenario where Queensland have been bowled out for just 95.
“Brendan Doggett take a bow, and it's been a tremendous performance from all the South Australian bowlers, the three seamers combining to run right over the senior experienced Queensland batting lineup.
“They've given themselves the platform and if they don’t have one foot in, they've got at least a few toes into the door towards what will be a historic occasion.”
