Maxwell helps Stars keep BBL finals hopes alive with third consecutive victory
The Melbourne Stars have kept their slim BBL finals hopes alive after defeating the Sydney Sixers by 16 runs at the MCG on Thursday night.
Glenn Maxwell was the key man for the Stars as the superstar smashed an unbeaten 58 from 32 balls on the same day he missed out on the Australian Test squad for the two-match series of Sri Lanka.
Maxwell was well supported by returning all-rounder Beau Webster who made 48 after returning from Test duties.
Their efforts helped the side set the Sixers a target of 157 to win, and the Sydneysiders could only manage 140 despite James Vince’s 53 from 44 balls at the top of the order.
Mark Steketee (3/14), Peter Siddle (2/26), Marcus Stoinis (2/30) and Usama Mir (2/19) combined to ensure that the Sixers couldn’t get any partnerships together in the last seven overs of their chase.
After their 0-5 start, the Stars are now 3-5 and have lifted themselves off the bottom of the table.
With two remaining games against the Renegades at Marvel Stadium on Sunday and a final clash the following Sunday against the Hurricanes at the MCG, the Stars will almost certainly need to win both of those to give themselves real hope of pinching a finals berth.
The BBL|14 season continues on Friday night with the Hurricanes hosting the Thunder in Hobart, listen to every ball of the campaign on SEN and the SEN app.
