Matt Reid’s best bets for Friday night racing at Launceston (21/02)

The 2025 Launceston Cup Carnival begins on Friday night, with the running of the Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Oaks program.
It's a good field for the Oaks, with the recent Strutt Stakes providing the main local lead-up against some visitors who bring across solid form.
The rail is in true for the first of two meetings at the track in the space of five days, with fine weather forecast.

Race 7 – 2. Captain Cam
Captain Cam trialled well in early December and was then the best part of two months before he raced, suggesting there was a setback in between. His fresh run was super early in the month, rattling home from near the tail on a day where it was a big advantage to be on pace. Drops in weight here and draws to be smothered up for a turn of foot that he’s shown he has.

Race 3 – 10. Geegeehailstorm
It took Geegeehailstorm 16 starts to win a maiden, but that result was overdue, and it came emphatically to open Hobart Cup Day. She’s placed five of seven at the T&D, including a narrow miss here two back behind Snowdonia, who has since run well again. Will need luck and a good steer from an awkward alley but should be strong late.

Race 5 – 1. Romary
Given the likelihood of Unique Eagle being a short favourite, I’ll put Romary in the “rough” category if an upset eventuates. She should be ready to peak third-up after two acceptable runs and is in well at the weights with 57.5kg as a 75-rater in BM68 grade. It’s nearing two years since her last win, but seven of those victories have come in Launceston. I think she’s clearly second pick if the favourite is off her game.
