From the farms of New Zealand to the grand stage of Flemington, James McDonald and Chris Waller have forged one of racing’s most successful and enduring partnerships — built on trust, shared values, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
When McDonald climbs aboard a Waller runner, there’s an unmistakable sense of confidence. Together, the champion jockey and leading trainer have formed a partnership that has delivered some of Australian racing’s most memorable moments — from Nature Strip’s breathtaking sprints to Verry Elleegant’s Melbourne Cup triumph.
Both proudly Kiwi, McDonald and Waller share humble beginnings that keep them grounded despite their glittering success. “We’re both from dairy-farming families,” McDonald reflects.
“He’s from Foxton, I’m from Cambridge — very similar backgrounds.
“We’ve got a lot in common.”
That common ground extends beyond heritage. It’s evident in their mutual respect and seamless communication — a connection honed through countless early mornings and major race days. “We have a great working relationship,” McDonald says. “He knows what to expect from me, and I know his horses are going to be pretty damn good when it matters.”
Waller’s meticulous preparation and McDonald’s instinctive feel have created a dynamic duo that defines modern Australian racing. “He’s extremely hardworking,” McDonald notes. “He always gives a bit of advice, but he also trusts the decisions we make out there. That’s why it works so well.”
Their understanding goes deeper than tactics — it’s about belief. “It’s racing — not everything goes perfectly,” McDonald says.
“But Chris gets that. He’s understanding, he knows people make mistakes.
“Yet his record speaks for itself.”
