Does Australia have too many races during the Christmas period?
During the Christmas season do we have too much racing or not enough?
That is the question which racing tipster Miles Pfitzner asked fellow form guru Mick Gannon and trainer Reece Goodwin.
Gannon was the first to answer, stating that while Christmas Day was difficult with no races running, he believes that there needs to be more of a break this time of year.
“The one thing that sort of gets me, is there's no horses to bet on Christmas Day,” Gannon said on SENTrack & RSN.
“I know a lot of people like that, but it shows how much you love the game. I was a bit on edge, really.
“But what I will say is the participants need a break. Even doing form and as a tipster, they very much need a bit of time off.
“And I'd even be more for trying to go towards a Hong Kong model this time of year, where they just race on a midweek and a Saturday. I think less is definitely more this time of year.”
Pfitzner agreed: “I'm probably an advocate for less this time of year.”
Trainer Goodwin didn’t agree with the pair of tipsters though.
Goodwin believes that the amount of racing during the holiday season is just right, but he certainly wouldn’t be adding any more races.
“I think it's ok (at this time of year), to be fair,” the trainer admitted.
“We certainly don't need racing on Christmas Day - I had to give staff off. (But) I didn't know what to do with myself during the day without having a race to look at, do some form or punt.
“I think it sits ok, you certainly wouldn't want to add racing.”
