'Bulls**t': Cherry-Evans called out over transfer saga

Daly Cherry-Evans has been called out for his “bulls--t” retirement claims amid speculation he already had a deal in place with a rival NRL club before announcing he would be leaving Manly.
Farcical scenes on Monday night saw Cherry-Evans announce on live television that he was leaving Brookvale at the end of 2025 while on another broadcast Manly’s powerbrokers were offering him a new two-year deal.
The 36-year-old, who has been at Manly since 2011, said he was yet to decide if he would retire altogether, join another club or head overseas.
“I don’t believe a word of that (retirement talk),” Braith Anasta said on NRL 360.
“You’re telling me he’s considering retirement or going to the Super League? That’s bulls--t. That’s garbage, he’s playing on, that was never going to happen.”
Amid mass confusion over the halfback’s future, Manly called a press conference on Tuesday in a bid to clarify their position.
“Daly is a legend at this club. If he plays in the NRL we want him to play with the Manly Sea Eagles,” Manly CEO Tony Mestrov said.
“Daly has felt like he’s had to come out. We did not want to make him an offer or infiltrate him in any way.
“We made an offer (on Monday) to his manager and we had been speaking about that for a while.
“There is no animosity with me, the club or the coach. As far as we were concerned, Daly wasn’t sure what he was going to do and I don’t think he’s still certain if he wants to retire.
“We were discussing an offer in October/November. He was clear it would be his last year at Manly. It’s his right to do whatever he wants.
“We weren’t blindsided, I think he’s still not sure what he is doing. While he is reconsidering his future, we made an offer.”
While Manly look to calm the waters, speculation over where Cherry-Evans will land is mounting with the Roosters favourite to secure his signature.
“The Sydney Roosters makes absolute sense,” David Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“The sleeper is the Dolphins. They have been secretly preparing an offer around the $1 million mark.
“Those are the two clubs I’m watching intently. I’m not interested in anyone else.”
