New Zealand Cricket announced Friday that Wellington Firebirds medium-fast bowler Ben Sears has been called into the Blackcaps' ODI squad as cover for Kyle Jamieson.
The towering pace bowler recently returned to international duty for New Zealand's two-match Test series in Bangladesh. Following back surgery earlier in the year, Jamieson bowled 2/52 and 0/25 in the first Test, and just 0/8 in the second.
Jamieson reported that he had experienced stiffness in his left hamstring during his travels home. The Test squad arrived on Tuesday evening, before the 28-year-old headed to Dunedin on Thursday.
Blackcaps coach Gary Stead is describing the move as a precautionary measure.
"We don’t want to rush or push him back, particularly at the very start of our home summer," Stead said.
“He could play if absolutely necessary but we don’t want to take any unnecessary risks, hence calling in Ben for this first match.
“Ben’s familiar to the team environment and it’s been good to see him back at full fitness for the Firebirds.”
The Blackcaps face Bangladesh at Dunedin's University Oval in the first of only three one-day internationals for the home summer on Sunday, before heading to Nelson (Wednesday) and Napier (Saturday) - the two sides will also meet in three T20Is.
