Babar to star for Sixers in BBL15
The Sydney Sixers have landed a massive coup for the upcoming BBL season by signing former Pakistan captain Babar Azam ahead of this week’s BBL draft.
Azam is set to play the entire BBL|15 season as well as the finals if the Sixers were to qualify for them.
This will see him join the likes of Steve Smith, Josh Philippe and Jordan Silk as the Sixers continue to build depth within its batting line-up.
In a statement released by the team, general manager and former Australian cricketer Rachael Haynes said she was delighted that Azam will be playing in magenta.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Babar to the Sixers this summer,” Haynes said.
“Babar’s resume speaks for itself. The skill, professionalism, and experience that he brings is of enormous value to our playing group and the news is obviously incredibly exciting for our fans.
“He is a world-class player and a proven leader. He’s not only a huge addition to our club but to the league as a whole.”
Azam’s stats at the T20 level are impressive, to say the least.
At an international level, he currently averages just under 40 runs with a strike rate of 129.
While he had a quiet season by his standards in the Pakistan Super League, he still averaged 36 runs which saw him rank equal 13th within the competition.
Azam is now the latest Pakistani player to either sign with a BBL club or nominate themselves for the BBL draft.
Other Pakistani players that could feature in BBL|15 include the likes of fast bowler Shaheen Afridi and wicketkeeper Mohammed Rizwan.
The BBL draft will take place next week on June 19. It will be broadcast on 7Mate, 7Plus, Foxtel and Kayo from 4 pm AEST.
