“A silly price”: Star mare comes up at “ludicrous” odds for Champions Sprint

Bella Nipotina has come up a “ludicrous” price for the Champions Sprint (1200m) this weekend.
The Everest winner, who won again at Rosehill last weekend, is the $4.20 favourite with Sportsbet for the Group 1 sprint on the final day of the Flemington Carnival on Saturday.
Form guru Mick Gannon cannot believe the price of the star mare even despite the fact she is yet to win in 10 starts at Flemington.
“I think the only reason they can get her at that price is because she’s had 10 starts at this track and at this setup she hasn’t been great either,” Gannon said on SENTrack’s Giddy Up.
“But she’s going so much better (now). She’s clearly the horse to beat in this race.
“At this track and distance she’s had five starts and one placing. Forget about that, she’s going so much better than what she was in previous preparations, she draws perfectly, Craig Williams on, gets the best part of the track.
“I think Bella Nipotina is a genuine $3 shot. $4.20 is ludicrous.
“Baraqiel and Overpass are two big chances in the race but they likely get to the wrong part of the track.
“I think Giga Kick is the quinella horse, but Bella Nipotina clearly on top and that’s a silly price.”
Trainer Ciaron Maher had earlier joined Giddy Up and spoke glowingly of the seven-year-old mare who has now won in excess of $20 million in prize money.
“She’s on a similar program to last year and you would say she’s in better form this year,” Maher said on the Stable Mail segment.
“She seems to have come through her run quite well. Obviously a couple more days to go but all the signs are pretty positive at this stage.”
Bella Nipotina ran fifth in the Champions Sprint last year which was won by Imperatriz.
The 2024 edition jumps at 3:50pm AEDT on Saturday on the fourth and final day of the Flemington Carnival.
