Who are the Australian Olympians to watch in Milano Cortina?
Australia’s Chef de Mission for the 2026 Winter Olympics, Alisa Camplin-Warner, has gone through some of the medal chances that the country has for the upcoming games.
In the last Winter Olympics, held in Beijing, Australia sent a squad of 43 athletes, which picked up a record of four medals (one gold, two silver and one bronze).
With a squad of 53 (the second highest in Australia’s Winter Olympic history) being sent to Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, hopes are once again high for another record-breaking haul.
Especially with some previous medallists having run into form at the right time, according to the 2002 Gold Medalist.
“There’s quite a long list, we’ve had 11 different athletes win 26 medals (with) 13 of those (being) gold over the last three months on the World Cup tour,” Camplin-Warner told SEN’s Kick Off with Brandy and Jimmy.
“Our mogul skiers, hopefully defending Olympic champion, would be Jakara Anthony. She won gold in Beijing four years ago, and she’s in red-hot form (at the moment).
“We’ve also got Matt Graham, who’s been on the podium and had a win this season, too. He’s our silver medallist from PyeongChang in men’s moguls.
“So, they both have two opportunities in the individual (moguls) and the new duals event.”
But there are also plenty of other medal chances in this Australian team outside of the moguls.
Whether it be the experienced Scotty James competing in his fifth Olympics to snag his elusive gold medal in the Snowboard Halfpipe or 15-year-old Indra Brown competing against Chinese superstar Eileen Gu in the Free Ski Half Pipe, there will be plenty of names to cheer on for Olympic glory.
“Then we’ve got our aerialists,” she continued.
“Laura Peel and Danielle Scott, who have both been on the podium this season, and both have been World Cup No.1s over the last few years.
“(In the) snowboard-cross, Adam Lambert is wearing the No.1 bib, and Josie Baff has been on the podium a few times.
“And then Valentino Guseli has also been on the podium a few times alongside Scotty James in the halfpipe.
“Bobsled Bree (Walker). She’s had five podiums this season, so she’s rocking out the women’s monobob, and that would be a first if she is fortunate enough to have a good run here (and medal).
“And the last one I should mention would be Indra Brown. The 15-year-old in the free ski half pipe.
“She has landed on the podium (in) her first three World Cup showings. She’s standing next to people like Eileen Gu. It’s pretty phenomenal for a young kid.
“And that’s just a starting list.”
The Winter Olympics will get underway on February 6.
