Will Rowell re-sign with the Suns?

With news of Chad Warner signing a two-year contract to stay at the Sydney Swans, attention has shifted over to some of the other players who are coming out of contract in 2025.
One of the names that list managers, fans and journalists have been keeping an eye on is Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell.
The number one pick from the 2020 draft is currently on track for a career year as he averages 27.6 disposals, 9.6 score involvements, seven tackles, nine clearances and 6.8 inside 50s per game which gives you just a snippet of how well he has playing.
This sees him sit fourth in the AFL in Champion Data’s player ratings averages.
Rowell's contract situation and performances over the years has seen many clubs throw their hat in the ring to secure his signature.
This includes the likes of Geelong, Collingwood and Essendon.
While Rowell at this stage is expected to stay at the Suns, Gerard Healy thinks that if Rowell were to move, it would leave massive question marks about the Gold Coast’s ability to compete for a premiership.
“It’s a banner signing for the Gold Coast,” Healy declared on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“If Matt Rowell left, it would be a big, big blow and you’d question, okay can they ever get there?
“And they're not far away right now.”
SEN’s Sam Edmund still has the Suns as the favourites to keep Rowell.
However, he expects that Rowell will take his time to decide which will only add to speculation around his contract position.
“He’s in no rush. He’s really focused on the week to week, we’re always told that,” Edmund clarified.
“He might even be leading the Brownlow right now, Matt Rowell.
“I guess we’re all wondering whether we can fully trust the Gold Coast Suns and I don’t think he’s any different, to be honest.
“We watched Gold Coast last week and we think how did they lose that game (to Richmond), they build up and let you down.
“So, he’s not going to sign now while that picture comes into sharper focus, I don’t think.
“Is he more likely to stay, I’d say absolutely.”
In previous months, Rowell has said on multiple occasions to different media outlets that he would extend his contract with the Suns for 2026 and beyond.
But until it is confirmed by Rowell and the Suns, it only adds more speculation about his future.
Rowell will feature in Gold Coast’s next match against the Sydney Swans at Peoples First Stadium on Sunday. The game will kick off at 1:15pm AEST.
