Why the Matt Kennedy trade has been a win for both Carlton and the Bulldogs
Matt Kennedy’s hot start to the season for the Western Bulldogs has sparked some questions about Carlton’s decision to let go of the 28-year-old, but Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne believes it was a smart decision for both parties.
The Blues received just Pick 38 in the four-way trade that saw Kennedy land at The Kennel in last year’s trade period.
Some sections of Blues fans have bemoaned Kennedy's loss, but Hoyne believes his absence has only paved the way for George Hewett’s strong form.
"I get that they didn't get much in return for (Matt Kennedy)… What he is doing as an individual is superb. But you think about the flip side to Carlton, what George Hewett is doing at the moment is brilliant,” Hoyne said on SEN’s Sportsday.
“He's brilliant defensively to be able to lock away on the opposition's best offensive midfielder, and then the offensive returns that he's generating is superb.
“So, I think it's the easy thing to criticise Carlton… Well, just stop, think, big picture.
“Carlton get the money off the books, (and) didn't really need him to be in that midfield group.”

Hoyne also likened the move to Hawthorn’s decision to trade away Josh Kennedy at the end of 2009.
“You go back to the Ben McGlynn and Josh Kennedy trade for Hawthorn, they didn't need Josh Kennedy at that time. They got rid of him,” Hoyne added.
“Kennedy went on a brilliant career, Hawthorn went on to win three flags, win-win, right.
“So just let that one go, I think, if you're an outsider looking in with a Matt Kennedy conversation.”
Kennedy had 22 touches, 10 clearances, six tackles and two goals in the Doggies' massive win over St Kilda on Sunday night.
In his first season in the red, white and blue, the 28-year-old is averaging 23.5 disposals and 6.7 clearances since crossing from Carlton.
For the Blues, former Swan Hewett is enjoying a career year in navy blue, averaging 30.3 disposals, 8.2 clearances and 7.3 tackle.
