Why Brereton has Collingwood as a top-two seed ahead of the 2025 season

AFL great Dermott Brereton is bullish on what Collingwood can produce in 2025.
The Hawthorn great loved the Magpies’ performance in their 83-point AAMI Community Series win over Richmond with all three of the club’s off-season recruits Dan Houston (one goal, 22 disposals), Harry Perryman (one goal, 20 disposals, 10 tackles) and Tim Membrey (four goals) impressing.
Having already been a big fan of what Collingwood was putting together before watching their official pre-season hit-out, Brereton has the Magpies as a top-two seed for the season ahead.
The key reason behind his pick is Collingwood’s use by foot out of the backline with Houston and Josh Daicos standouts in that department.
“I think the Magpies are probably my one or two seed for the season,” Brereton told SEN Afternoons.
“The best kick of the ball coming out of their backline is (Nick) Daicos, but now you don't have to run Daicos’ butt off and get him down there to kick and to make the kick-ins, because you've got Dan Houston who can do that as well.
“So, you've got two extraordinarily good kickers, accurate kickers and long kickers out of the backline (in Houston and Josh Daicos).
“Nick Daicos can spend more time using that creativity and his ability to see things unfold around the middle of the ground.
“I think that it's really going to suit them well and Tim Membrey showed that even if he's not your first selected in your three target forwards each week, when he comes in, he's ready-made for the job.”
Collingwood begin their 2025 campaign with an Opening Round clash against GWS at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday, March 9.
