SEN Cricket’s Gerard Whateley most looks forward to the Adelaide Test each year.
Since 2015, eight of the nine Tests played at the venue have come in the pink-ball variety, and Whateley believes that the day/night aspect of the clash really builds the overall experience.
While Boxing Day is still the showpiece event of the Australian cricket calendar with the MCG hosting the largest crowds at the most ideal time of year for attendance, Adelaide has truly created its own magic with day/night cricket.
It’s not just the on-field events that excite Whateley and cricket fans alike, with the famous Adelaide Oval Hill and SACA Village Green behind the Members’ area brimming with life as the social aspect of the fixture comes to life.
“It's my favourite Test match of the year,” Whateley told SEN Mornings.
“I think to those who have been, it's the best overall experience.
“Boxing Day is incredibly special and that's the showpiece day. But Adelaide is the perfect town for this, that’s what the AFL unlocked with Gather Round.
“It's what Test cricket has always known, the pilgrimage to go to the Adelaide Test with all the social activity around it, what they have out the side of the members is just so clever.
“It's incredibly well supported and cherished in the town.
“I love the pink ball, I know some of the players are still reluctant about it but it changes the dynamic of the game.
“It's got intrigue within it and then it's got the spectacle that the sun setting.
“It's the best Test match on the calendar.”
The second Test between Australia and India begins on Friday, December 6. Listen to every ball LIVE on SEN and the SEN app.
