Who did the coaches miss in Round 14?
Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has assessed which players were overlooked in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.
See who the coaches missed below:
Joel Freijah (Western Bulldogs)
“Didn’t get a vote from the coaches, third-highest rated player on the ground,” Hoyne told SEN’s Sportsday.
“Since their bye – 93% game time in defence against Hawthorn, half his game time down back against St Kilda.
“Might be joining Bailey Dale as the 2 halfback flankers.”
Dayne Zorko (Brisbane)
“Highest-rated player on the ground, didn’t get a vote.”
“Season best game for Dayne Zorko.
“His ball use across half back is superb and instrumental for Brisbane down there.”
Brad Close (Geelong)
“I reckon every team would kill for a player (like) Brad Close,” Hoyne admitted.
“Didn’t get a vote, sixth-highest rated player on the ground.
“(I) think he’s the best defensive forward in the competition, watch him to go to Dayne Zorko this weekend.
“(Brad Close) does (it) both offensively and defensively.”
Sam Switkowski (Fremantle)
“Champion Data favourite, 2 out of the last 3 weeks.
“Unfortunately gone down with injury, but before he went down was Fremantle’s highest-rated player on the ground.
“Didn’t get a vote from the coaches.
“14 disposals, 9 scores – maximum damage player Sam Switkowski, and has been that for a while.”
Miles Bergman (Port Adelaide)
“I was really surprised with this one,” Hoyne admitted.
“Miles Bergman didn’t get a vote from the coaches, fourth-highest rated player on the ground.
“Christian Petracca (who Bergman played a role on, was the) 19th highest-rated player on the ground, and then had impact offensively himself.
“So, he’s playing that role extremely well over the last couple of weeks.”
Hoyne also revealed the round’s Most Damaging Player (MDP).
“Max Holmes overall, highest-rated game for the season,” Hoyne revealed.
“No one used the ball better than what Max Holmes did.”
