Ange Postecoglou vowed to win silverware in his first two seasons at Tottenham and the time of reckoning is upon the Australian.
His side will meet Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao, Spain on Thursday May 22 and it’s not just history on the line, it’s Postecoglou’s job.
For much of the Premier League season the 59-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation with reports in the UK suggesting he will lose his job irrespective of the result in Spain.
Doubts over his future come off the back of Tottenham’s worst league season on record based on ladder placement. Having lost 21 games this season they are currently 17th on the table but will avoid relegation.
It’s been almost 41 years since Tottenham won in Europe under the leadership of Keith Burkinshaw and in a bizarre twist of fate, it was also his last match as manager of the club.
While it remains to be seen if history will repeat itself, Postecoglou has received some backing from former Spurs great Micky Hazard who has urged Daniel Levy to standby his man.
"I think it's important that they get out of that cycle, win or bust, win or bust, win or bust," the 65-year-old said.
"Look through history and you look at Alex Ferguson. He took five or six years to win things with Manchester United and then he won things non-stop.
"Success — it's not overnight, and the longer it takes to get it, the more solid the foundation is.
"Alex Ferguson built on his first five years of not winning a trophy by winning everything for the next 20 years.
"When Keith was allowed to resign I thought it was a big, big loss. I didn't agree with it.
"Will Ange stay? I'm of the belief that winning a trophy is the most amazing thing in football. I always say that if someone wins a trophy they have earned the right to have another crack.
"Would it be right to get rid of someone that changed the mentality and got the club over the line?"
