What’s the pass mark for Dean Cox’s Swans in season 2025?
What’s the pass mark for Dean Cox and Sydney in the new coach’s first season at the helm?
That was the question posed by SEN Breakfast’s Sam Edmund to triple-premiership forward Cameron Mooney.
After the Swans finished the 2024 season as minor premiers before losing the Grand Final to Brisbane, Edmund thinks that they must finish top four again even though Cox has no senior coaching experience.
The pair agree that the bar has been set high by Cox’s predecessor John Longmire who made five Grand Finals and led his side to September footy in 12 of his 14 campaigns in charge.

Edmund: “What's a pass mark for Dean Cox taking over from John Longmire at the Sydney Swans who just lost a Grand Final?”
Mooney: “Well, their pass mark is playing finals. In 12 out of the last 14 years, they've played finals. That's a pass mark for Sydney.”
Edmund: “But the pass mark has got to be higher than finishing eighth, doesn't it?
“It's got to be top four, and it's got to be contending, doesn't it?”
Mooney: “Take the Grand Final loss away and I know that's hard, do we believe that they're a top-four team?”
Edmund: “Yes.”
Mooney: “Then, I can't see why they wouldn't be there again.”
Edmund: “John Longmire’s pass mark was going to be a flag, that's a really, really high bar to state the bleeding obvious.
“In many ways, it brings that sort of pressure. Whereas if you've taken over a Richmond, for example, then you're given a bit of time.”
Sydney opens their 2025 season with an Opening Round clash against Hawthorn on Friday, March 7.
