The Blackcaps were facing another drawn Test against the West Indies.
Plenty of runs were being scored in the first four days of the third Test, but wickets proved hard to come by for both sides.
New Zealand was 575/8d in the first innings after captain Tom Latham won the toss and decided to bat, the Windies responded with 420.
Just before lunch on Day 4, the Blackcaps went back out to bat, scoring another 306/2d to set a mammoth target of 462 runs as the penultimate day neared its end.
But with the cracks on the Bay Oval pitch becoming more pronounced on Day 5, gone was the batter's paradise seen earlier in the match, and perhaps a chance for the likes of frontline spinner Ajaz Patel to shine - or for Jacob Duffy to take more wickets and overtake Sir Richard Hadlee for the most wickets taken in a single calendar year across all formats.
The visitors required 419 runs on the final day, the Blackcaps needed 10 wickets.
