Spectacular Spaun wins the US Open
J.J Spaun is the 2025 US Open champion!
With five bogeys before the suspension in play, it looked like it wasn't going to be Spaun's day. A series of bad breaks early turned a one shot deficit at the start of the day into a four shot deficit through 9 holes.
The timing of the rain delay allowed Spaun to reset and the American rallied. Spaun's luck turned at the 12th hole making a 30 foot putt for birdie. Spaun would go on to birdie 14 and 17 but still wasn't in the clear.
A late surge from Scotland's Robert MacIntyre meant Spaun would need to par the final hole to avoid a play off. A spectacular 60 foot birdie at 18 all but secured the win for Spaun as he pushing his lead out to two shots.
Securing his first major, the emotions pour out of Spaun and his team. Watch the putt and reactions below!
Not to be for Adam Scott
Play resumed and conditions were significantly tougher. The afternoon saw the leaders continuously fall back in touch with the field. By the 12th hole, Sam Burns and Adam Scott were tied for the lead +1 alongside three others.
Unfortunately, it wasn't to be for Adam Scott. The 44 years old battled bravely in the brutal conditions but ran out of steam after the delay in play. The Aussie finished T12 for the weekend. Bad breaks and the putter going cold grinded Scott to halt as the Australian couldn't pick up any momentum late in his round
Leader at the start of the day, Sam Burns, suffered a similar faith. Double bogey on 11 and 15 left the American chasing the lead late. Ultimately, birdies at 17 and 18 for Spaun left Burns with too much to do late.
