North Melbourne star Harry Sheezel has welcomed the news of teammate Colby McKercher’s contract extension until 2028, saying the young gun’s commitment is a major boost for the struggling club.
Speaking on SEN’s Dwayne’s World, Sheezel revealed North broke the news to the playing group this morning, and the whole club was ecstatic.
“They broke that (news) this morning, which was great news for the club,” Sheezel said.
“All the boys were definitely up and about because of that.”
Sheezel heaped praise onto the rising North Melbourne star, exclaiming that McKercher’s move to halfback has been excellent.
“Everyone can see how talented Colby is,” said Sheezel.
“No one really has that same speed and ability to take the game on.
“His past month of footy since he's gone to halfback has been incredible.”
The 2023 Rising Star winner said he never had any concerns that McKercher would be lured away, even amid speculation earlier this season that he would go straight to his home-state Tasmania in 2028, when the Tasmania Devils start playing in the AFL.
“I never had any doubt that he wouldn't be sticking around, even having those conversations (with him) as soon as he got drafted,” Sheezel revealed.
“I was always confident that he would stick around.
“He loves the place.”
Despite the current contract extension, Sheezel believes that McKercher will sign on for the Roos for 2029 and beyond.
“I can't wait to play alongside him for the next few years,” Sheezel exclaimed.
“But beyond that as well.
“I’ve no doubt he'll stay for even longer than when he signed this time.”
While fans were excited by the contract news, some were left sweating on Sheezel’s own fitness after he was seen heading for scans on his shoulder following North’s clash with Hawthorn.
But the 20-year-old was quick to put those fears to rest.
“It’s probably been in the media a bit that I've hurt my shoulder,” Sheezel admitted.
“But honestly, it's like nothing.
“I was fine straight after the game, and I'll be good to go tomorrow night.”
The young star admitted that the shoulder scans were purely precautionary, and that he was cleared of any injuries.
“(I got the scans) just to check,” revealed Sheezel.
“I copped a hit just in the last minute of that Hawks game, which was a bit unfortunate.
“Seriously, the scans didn't show much at all, and (I'm) feeling really good and confident with it.”
