Why Madge is grateful for Tigertown experience
Michael Maguire has explained the main thing that he learnt about his tenure at the Wests Tigers which has helped him achieve premiership success.
The current Brisbane Broncos coach has become the sixth coach to have won an NRL premiership with multiple clubs following their win last Sunday.
He is also now the only coach outside of Wayne Bennett to have won an NRL Premiership with the Broncos.
While Maguire has had success at nearly every club he has been with, one of the few failures that he had during his coaching career was his tenure at the Wests Tigers.
After being appointed to the struggling club for the 2019 season, the former Raiders player was only able to take the Tigers as high as ninth in his four seasons before departing in 2022 with a winning percentage of 36.25%.
Since then, Maguire has built his reputation up again, having won with New Zealand and New South Wales before taking up the job at the Broncos.
When asked about the experience at the Wests Tigers in further detail, the 51-year-old thinks that it helped him become a better coach by understanding the need to be grateful.
“I learned a hell of a lot through that period,” Maguire said on SEN’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns.
“And people will think that I’m crazy, but I actually enjoyed the time because I think it changed me.
“It made me a better coach, it made me understand, I’m more grateful for everything that I have because it is hard to win a competition, it's bloody hard to get yourself up in that space.
“And certain clubs are up there, and the previous ones in Penrith and Melbourne, they have been the mainstays.
“And that’s the culture that you develop in your clubs. So, you’ve got to work hard at everyone; it’s not just the playing group, it’s your staff, it’s your administration, it’s everyone.
“If you don’t have that right, then the old Jack Gibson saying that 'it starts from the front' is so true.
“So, you’ve got to make sure that all of the things within your club are in a good place so that you can do the things we’ve done."
