Mid-season review: The glaring issues facing Hawthorn

Kane Cornes and David King have assessed every teams’ start to 2025 as the competition enters the halfway point of the season.
Debated on SEN’s Fireball, the pundits take a deep dive into the positives and negatives from the first 14 weeks and determine whether the side is meeting their preseason expectations.
With Hawthorn heading into their week off in fifth spot on the ladder, Cornes and King analysed the Hawks start to the year.
Sam Mitchell’s men began the year with four consecutive wins before slumping to three losses in a row however they have re-grouped with back-to-back victories before the bye.
Hawthorn
The Hawks ended 2024 as the hottest team in the competition, recovering from a 0-5 start to make a semi-final.
With expectations high, the Hawks lived up to the hype early however were exposed by some of the competitions better sides in recent weeks.
“Hawthorn are where we thought they would be,” King said.
“Thought they got ahead of themselves the first 10 weeks of the season, they’ve had the pow wow, and have really straightened up.
“I think Mitch (Sam Mitchell) has done a good job to get them back on track.
“Just two glaring issues, I think their D50 needs to find itself and they are still learning about each other and what they do with (James) Sicily.
“Will Day is he coming back, is he not coming back who knows, and what sort of levels can he get too they are the only things that are really points of contention.
