Meek in MRO hot water as Hollywood Hawks lose three on the trot
Lloyd Meek is expected to face the MRO after a bump on Collingwood’s Patrick Lipinski resulted in a concussion.
Hawthorn lost by 51 points against Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night. This means that the Hawks have now lost their last three games and have slipped to the bottom reaches of the top eight.
But one of the main talking points of the game was the incident between Meek and Lipinski.
In the third quarter, the Hawthorn ruckman made contact with Lipinski’s head after a late challenge to try and spoil the ball.
Lipinski received a 50m penalty resulting in a goal with the Collingwood players making their feelings known towards Meek.
On Channel 7, Daisy Thomas would defend Meek’s decision to take part in the contest.
“If I’m Sam Mitchell, I’m standing there going ‘I don’t want you pulling out of that ever’,” Thomas said.
“It’s brave from Lipinski and great to remonstrate from the Pies but that’s just a good hard contest.”
Matthew Richardson also supported Meek’s actions acknowledging that the 50m penalty should be as far as it goes.
“It’s the right call,” Richardson said.
“It was a little bit late, 50 and that’s it. He actually avoided taking him high.”
Lipinski would be taken off after kicking the goal to do a concussion test which he failed with Lachie Sullivan being subbed on for Collingwood.
As a result of Lipinski being subbed off for a concussion, this will likely mean that Meek will face a three-week suspension.
On Fox Footy post-game, Jon Ralph elaborated as to why Meek may be in trouble.
“The problem is... it was late, and it was high. It doesn’t really matter whether it was caused by the late fist to the head, or it was caused by Lipinski’s head hitting the ground. He is responsible for all that contact,” Ralph said.
“I do think it’s late enough for a ‘rough conduct’ (charge). So, the concussion means it has to be three weeks, it has to be (a) severe impact.”
Speaking post-game, Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell was unaware that Lipinski had been subbed off due to concussion.
He would make no further comment on the incident.
The MRO’s findings from Friday night’s game are expected to be announced on Saturday.
