The Sydney Thunder secured a spot in the BBL|14 finals with a crushing 61-run win over the Perth Scorchers at the Sydney Showground on Monday night.
Opener Sam Konstas was the top scorer on the night, making 53 off 42 balls with five fours and two sixes.
His innings was the highlight of a one-sided contest but the Thunder had to rally late thanks to Tom Andrews (37 not out off 13 balls) and Chris Green (20 not out) producing a vital partnership of 44.
The home side would eventually find their way to 7/158 despite the best efforts of Scorchers quick Lance Morris who took 3/43.
In response the five-time BBL champions faltered with the bat.
Perth was dismissed for just 97 with Aaron Hardie’s 22 and Jason Behrendorff’s unbeaten 17 the only real resistance.
Green was the pick of the Thunder bowlers with figures of 3/13 while Nathan McAndrew picked up 2/21 including the prized wicket of dangerous Scorchers opener Finn Allen.
Green’s fellow spinner Tanveer Sangha produced a peach to dismiss Hardie.
The result has David Warner’s Thunder currently sitting on top of the BBL table with five wins from nine regular season matches and an assured spot in the final four. They next meet the second-placed Sixers in the Sydney Smash at the SCG on Friday.
The Scorchers fell the other way, winding up on the bottom with just three victories to their name ahead of the meeting with the Adelaide Strikers at home on Saturday. Their finals hopes appear dashed unless a minor miracle occurs.
BBL|14 continues on Tuesday night with the Hobart Hurricanes hosting the Melbourne Renegades at Ninja Stadium from 7:30pm AEDT. You can hear all the action LIVE on SEN.
