India wrestle back momentum early to put Australia in a spot of bother at lunch on day two
After a fiery last few minutes of play yesterday, the Australians resumed on day two at 1/9, with Sam Konstas on seven and Marnus Labuschagne yet to face.
India struck early in proceedings when Labuschagne was given not out for caught behind off the bowling of Bumrah, which was immediately sent upstairs, showing a clear spike as the ball passed the bat, and India had their man making it 2/15.
Washington Sundar had a chance to send Steve Smith walking with a direct hit but was wide, avoiding disaster for the Australians.
After some exciting charging down the wicket and ramp shots, Konstas, on 23, edged to Jaiswal at gully off the bowling of Siraj, and Australia was 3/35, still trailing India by 150 runs.
Then Siraj struck again in the same over, catching the edge of Travis Head and travelling straight to Kl Rahul at the second slip, and Australia were in serious trouble at 4/39.
Debutant Beau Webster then found himself at the crease and scored his first test run with a push out through point as he and Smith set out trying to recover this Australian innings.
Both Webster and Smith halted India’s momentum by putting together a 57-run partnership that looked set to see Australia through to Lunch only four down.
But just five minutes before lunch, Prasidh Krishna caught the edge of Smith being caught behind on 33, leaving Smith just five runs short of the 10,000 test run mark and putting Australia 5/96.
Alex Carey and Webster survived a few deliveries before Lunch was called with Australia on 5/101, Webster on 28 and Carey on 4.
So, having started the day on 1/9, Australia had lost four wickets for 92 runs in the morning session, with some brilliant bowling bringing India back into the test match.
