“I'm ready for footy”: Dwayne Russell's idea for the AFL's home and away schedule

SEN’s Dwayne Russell believes the AFL should look at starting the home and away season earlier than March 6, and capitalise on the month of February when there are less major sports in action.
“I’ve been long of the belief that the AFL should start at the end of February,” he said on SEN's Dwayne's World.
“I’d like the AFL season to start a week earlier, and I would make the season longer and the pre-season shorter.”
The AFL started earlier than ever in 2024 with Opening Round kicking off with Sydney vs Melbourne on March 7.
The season will start a day earlier this year, with the Lions and the Cats doing battle at the Gabba on Thursday, March 6.
“I like the fact that the AFL season has been made longer in terms of the number of games that we’ve got,” Russell said.
“But I would actually spread it over 26 weeks, I would give the players an extra bye, but have that extra bye with everyone having it at the same time.”
“I’d be starting the season a week earlier, I’m ready for footy.”
