How a domino effect could help Pies reinvent their forward mix in 2025
David King believes Collingwood should experiment with using their star midfielders up forward more in 2025.
No Magpie kicked more than 30 goals in 2024, though they’ll be hoping the returning Dan McStay and the addition of Tim Membrey gives them focal points inside 50.
However, King wonders whether the likes of Nick Daicos and Jordan De Goey could become prominent goal kickers playing more inside 50.

“The Pies need another goal kicker. I’ve had a look at that forward spot for the Pies. Gary Ablett Jnr started as a small forward and then became a 50-50 mid-forward and then became a goal square into the mid 30-70 option and kicked 44 goals in 2010,” King told SEN Breakfast.
“I just wonder whether you can look at keeping your star factor players on the ground a bit longer in that deep forward role. The Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin role of 2016-2017.
“I wonder whether Nick Daicos could look at that. I don’t know if they’re as well stocked in the forward half as the names represent.
“Talk about the domino effect. Dan Houston to half back gives them a bit more freedom. Harry Perryman in the midfield gives them more freedom. Maybe Jordan De Goey and Nick Daicos can play forward more. They could have that luxury.”
King admits he likes the addition of Membrey for the Pies given he can provide a ready-made option.
“I love the acquisition of Membrey. I think Membrey is a plug and play type,” King told SEN Breakfast.
“I think the second ruck position won’t just be Mason Cox’s this year and it’ll open up that extra tall position forward of the ball. If Dan McStay is in the team he’s the nominal second ruck, isn’t he?
“You really only need that player for six minutes a quarter.”
