“He loves the Suns”: Will Rowell leave Gold Coast after reported meetings with Cats, Pies and Dons?
Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell is set to be one of the most in-demand players this year if he remains unsigned beyond the 2025 season.
While the former No.1 pick won’t be eligible for free agency until the end of 2027, according to The Age that hasn’t stopped Geelong, Collingwood and Essendon all meeting with the inside bull in recent months in hopes of luring him back to Melbourne.
Even though Rowell has taken those reported meetings, SEN host Dwayne Russell can’t see the 23-year-old leaving the club that drafted him unless things take a turn for the worse in 2025.
He discussed Rowell’s future with AFL Media’s Michael Whiting on SEN Afternoons with the Queensland club expert also convinced that Rowell will remain at the Suns beyond this season.

Russell: “There’s a bit of thought that Matt Rowell could look at what's out there with other options if the Suns don't go well.
“But if they do go well, I can't see him leaving, what are your thoughts?”
Whiting: “I'm with you. Obviously, he's out of contract, it's the final year of his contract, and of course, other clubs are going to have a look.
“He's a terrific midfielder. He's come off a fantastic season and he loves the Suns and loves playing there.
“He's got a bunch of great mates, including his best mate Noah Anderson at the club who signed on for an extra couple of years.
“I can't see him going anywhere, but who knows? If they’re 2-10 and the wheels are falling off, you never know. But at this stage, I couldn’t see any reason why he’d leave.”
Russell: “I can't see any reason why he’d leave. I can't see them making the eight, but I don't think the wheels are going to fall off. I can see another almost consolidation year.”
Rowell has played 85 games for Gold Coast since making his debut in 2020. The powerful midfielder finished equal seventh in the 2024 Brownlow Medal on 25 votes.
