Fremantle star speaks candidly on decision to re-sign long term, confirms significant rival interest
Fremantle midfielder Andrew Brayshaw has spoken glowingly about the club following his decision to re-sign until the end of 2031.
The former Leigh Matthew Trophy winner was looming as one of the big out-of-contract stars at the end of 2025, with St Kilda reportedly named as one of the teams set to put a life-changing contract in front of him.
Brayshaw said getting the deal done before the start of the season and having the chance to tell the playing group was an amazing feeling.
“I feel amazing. As I started to tell my close family and friends I haven’t lost the smile off my face and when I told my teammates today, I’ve been stoked all day and thanking people who have helped me get to where I am now and promising them that I will try and pay back the debt of being selected early by the footy club,” Brayshaw told SEN WA’s The Run Home.”
“And that’s one of the main reasons I felt the needed to commit to the club, they gave me the chance to play AFL and they trust me and always trying to pay back the favour.
“Very excited to see what we can do over the next seven years.
“Myself and my fiancé, we’re both from Victoria, so there’s that pull back there potentially to want to go back and start a family over there, but at the end of the day I love this footy club and so does she. We call Perth home. When it came down to it, there was no way we were ever going to leave.”
Brayshaw admitted that his manager presented multiple offers to him from rival clubs, but adds that winning a flag for Fremantle came above any additional income.
“I was definitely made aware of a few things (offers from other clubs),” he said.
“My manager (Tom Petroro), his service to me is to provide me with all options and all people who are speaking to him and he definitely came to me at different points with offers from a couple of different clubs, and it made some discussions happen with me and my fiancé and at the end of the day we had to talk through what we’re really playing the game for and that’s to try and win a flag for Fremantle and that’s what it came down to.
“Being able to sign on here and give myself the next seven years, that’s the best position for it, so very happy.”
Fremantle has the tough task of heading to GMHBA Stadium to face Geelong in Round 1, before their first home clash against Sydney in Round 2.
