Melbourne Storm have revealed forward Eli Katoa remains in a stable condition after undergoing surgery overnight following a medical emergency during Tonga’s Pacific Championships clash with New Zealand.
Katoa suffered seizure activity on the bench in the second half and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Tongan forward was initially caught by an accidental hit in the air from teammate Lehi Hopoate during the warm-up.
Somehow passed to play, it took two HIA's during the game to finally get him off.
The decision to start Katoa has since been ruled “indefensible” by rugby league commentator Andrew Voss.
The club confirmed he is now recovering, supported by his partner and mother, with Storm medical staff staying in close contact with the hospital and Tonga’s team Chief Medical Officer.
Katoa offered an update from the hospital via Instagram story late Monday morning, saying "appreciate everyone for checking in, sorry if I haven't got back to any of you guys but I really appreciate the love and the messages. Ofa atu."
Support has flooded in from around the rugby league world, including the Kiwis, who showed their support via instagram.
“We just want to wish you the best for your recovery,” said Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.
"I wish you and the family all the best, brother. Keep safe mate.”
The Melbourne Storm have promised to provide a further update as additional information becomes available.
