Double domination: Australia’s men’s and women’s test sides wrap up both matches within minutes of each other
Both the Australian Men’s team and the Australian Women’s team have secured thumping victories over their opponents within minutes of each other late on Saturday evening to remind the world of their dominance in Test cricket.
The women’s side were able to clinch their clean sweep of the English side, defeating them by an innings and 122 runs to ensure they retain the Ashes with 16-0 series whitewash.
Alana King dominated with ball in hand in both innings, taking a whopping nine wickets for the match, with Ash Gardner’s five wickets being the next best.
The impressive batting displays of Annabel Sutherland (163 runs), who became the first woman to record a century in a Test match at the MCG, and Beth Mooney (106) helped steer the Aussies to a convincing lead that proved to be way too much for England to chase down.
As for the men’s side, a massive 232 run batting performance from Usman Khawaja, plus centuries from Steve Smith (141) and debutant Josh Inglis (102) helped destroy the Sri Lankins in Galle to claim the first match of the two-match series by an innings and 242 runs.
Steve Smith also made history on the first day of the test match, becoming the fourth Australian ever to record 10,000 test runs in his career.
Matthew Kuhnemann’s outstanding five wicket haul in the first innings helped force the follow on for Sri Lanka, which went for only 2.1 overs longer than the first innings and resulted in the hosts being dismantled again thanks to the Australian attack.
Kuhnemann finished with nine wickets for the match, with Nathan Lyon (seven) and Mitchell Starc (three) also helping get the job done for Australia in convincing fashion.
The second test between the two nations begins on Thursday February 6, with the venue being the same as the first match.
You’ll be able to hear all of the action LIVE from the second test in Galle on SEN and on the SEN app.
