Is Daly Cherry-Evans on the verge of announcing his retirement?
SEN's Andrew Voss certainly thinks that could be the case after Manly suffered their fourth consecutive defeat at the weekend in a result that has pushed them down the ladder with their finals hopes now on life support.
Cherry-Evans was always set to leave Manly at season’s end with a move to the Sydney Roosters all but confirmed, but given the veteran’s run of poor form in the back half of the season, Voss believes he may simply call time on his impressive career.
The 26-12 loss to the Tigers on Sunday means Manly have managed just 34 points in their past 368 minutes of playing meaning they must win their finals three matches and hope other results go in their favour.
Speaking after the defeat, Cherry-Evans, who is due to play his 350th game next weekend,
appeared a defeated man.
"It's just the realisation it's going to be hard to get there … it's what everyone wanted, not just me,” he said.
"I don't know if toll's the right word, but right now there's a bit to process.
"I've been here for so long, part of the club a long time, I've got a lot of love for this place.
"That (finals) is looking really unlikely now … but as I've done throughout my career, I've dusted myself off and will get ready for next week.
"We just couldn't get the footy gods smiling on us today, but we've got three games and I'd love to see us stop this four-game slide."
For Voss, there were two moments on Sunday which stood out and signalled the end for the 36-year-old.
“He sounded sad,” Voss said on SEN Breakfast.
“Theres something I witnessed at the ground live; he went down to chat with his wife and I’m no body language expert but it was an extended chat and I read into it that he’s telling his wife “I’m done” but that’s me jumping ahead.
“It’s odd, with three rounds to go because there was quite a bit of emotion there.
“There was one play in the game he was down near the line and he passed and it went into Ben Trbojevic and I saw a look on his (DCE’s) face where I thought, is that the moment Daly thinks ‘that’s it for my career’?
“I’m talking retirement, not Manly’s finals chances.
“Is that it for Cherry Evans?
"The harder he tried the worse it got. He did 10 times more than Luke Brooks, he tried hard and it got worse."
