The Blackcaps’ T20 World Cup campaign has suffered a blow, with all-rounder Michael Bracewell sidelined for the remainder of the tournament after aggravating a left calf injury.
Bracewell had been working his way back from the calf tear he suffered during New Zealand’s third ODI against India last month, but the issue resurfaced during warm-ups ahead of their opener against Afghanistan on Sunday.
Scans have since confirmed the injury, with the recovery timeline expected to rule him out for around three weeks.
Canterbury Kings skipper Cole McConchie has been called in as a travelling reserve and will link up with the squad in India alongside fast bowler Ben Sears.
McConchie, who last wore the silver fern in April 2024, earns the call-up following a strong domestic T20 campaign. He finished as Canterbury’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.71, and brings extensive experience to the group with 145 T20 matches to his name, including 12 at international level.

Blackcaps head coach Rob Walter said the squad was gutted for Bracewell.
“It’s incredibly disappointing for Michael,” Walter said.
“Missing a World Cup is tough, especially for someone who puts so much into representing New Zealand. He worked extremely hard to get himself back, but unfortunately this setback has ended his tournament. We’re all wishing him a smooth recovery.”
Walter said McConchie’s experience would be a valuable asset.
“Cole is a proven performer in T20 cricket,” he said.
“He offers a strong all-round skillset and a calm, experienced presence, which is important in a World Cup environment.”
McConchie is expected to join the squad on Friday the 13th, with New Zealand’s next assignment coming early Sunday morning (NZT) against South Africa, their third Group D fixture, starting at 2.30am.
