David Hussey says Australia’s shock Test defeat to Bangladesh should force a serious rethink.
The former Australian international believes complacency and poor preparation played a major role in the loss, after Australia won the toss and chose to bat first on a green wicket.
“I think it all falls into one as a culmination of complacency and poor preparation,” Hussey told Sport Nation’s Millsy & Guy.
With 20 Tests scheduled over the next 11 months, Hussey says Australia cannot afford to keep relying on an ageing core.
He backed selectors to start blooding younger players, while also suggesting Nathan Lyon’s (38 years old) time at the top may be coming to an end.
“Nathan’s had a great career, he’s one of the all-time greats for Australia, but it is time to move on,” Hussey said.
Hussey believes young spinners Corey Rocchiccioli, Todd Murphy and Tasmania’s Jarrod Freeman should now be pushing for Lyon’s spot.
He also called for patience with opener Jake Weatherald, despite a difficult start to his Test career, and suggested Travis Head could return to the middle order.
The former Australia cricketer admitted there are concerns around the depth coming through, particularly with a difficult tour of South Africa next on the horizon.
And with the Blackcaps due in Australia later this year, Hussey knows the hosts could be in for a serious challenge.
“I think it’s going to be one hell of a series coming up.”
