Matthew Wade has inspired the Hobart Hurricanes to another win over the Melbourne Renegades in BBL|15.
The 38-year-old dragged the ‘Canes out of trouble and over the line at Bellerive Oval with the run chase at times looking sketchy.
Batting at six, Wade struck 43 off 20 deliveries with two fours and four sixes including the winning runs on the final ball of the 19th over.
But the triumph wasn’t without a scare for the reigning champs.
The Renegades batted first and found their way to 9/162 through Ollie Peake (29) and openers Josh Brown and Tim Seifert (both 26), while four other batters reached double figures.
Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis was named Player of the Match for his efforts with the ball in taking 3/30 including the scalps of Brown and 'Gades skipper Will Sutherland (17).
The total required of 163 didn’t seem out of reach for the ‘Canes until Ben McDermott was bowled by an Adam Zampa wrong’un for a duck.
Zampa bowled excellently for his 3/25.
When Beau Webster skied one off Gurinder Sandhu and was caught by Andrew Tye, and Nikhil Chaudhary was plumb LBW to Zampa, it looked like it was getting out of hand for the hosts at 5/94 in the 13th over.
Enter Wade who got to business and sliced away at the target with help from Rehan Ahmed (23 off 14) and support from Chris Jordan (5 not out) at the end.
It was a third straight win for Hobart who beat the Renegades just nine days ago. They occupy second spot on the BBL table with a 4-1 record ahead of the New Year’s Day clash with the Perth Scorchers at home.
The 1-2 ‘Gades are at the foot of the table ahead of a crunch home clash with the Sydney Sixers also on New Year’s Day.
