Green v Webster: Which way will Aussie selectors go for SCG?
Will Cam Green lose his place in the Australian XI for the New Year’s Test in Sydney?
Many believe he should after failing to reach 20 in any of his previous four Ashes innings, particularly with Beau Webster waiting in the wings.
Given Webster didn’t do anything wrong to lose his spot in the Aussie XI, having averaged 34.63 with the bat and 23.25 with the ball across seven Tests in 2025, some are looking at this as a simple straight swap.
Bharat Sundaresan is one who believes the change should be made if you’re looking purely at numbers, but he’s not sure whether selectors will see things the same, given Green is 26 and Webster is 32.
“They should, but will they? I don't know,” Sundaresan said on SEN’s The New Ball.
“I'm divided on this. In my head, I'm going, 'Cam Green needs a break', but because the next Test match is so far away, their argument would be he doesn't need one.
“There will be a lot of people who will criticise what I'm going to say, but selectors in cricket or national teams think so differently to us.
“Sometimes, there are long-term investments that they make in some players, and Cam Green is definitely that.
“His numbers in the series have not been very good. He's taken three wickets and hasn't gotten the runs he wanted.
“His batting innings yesterday, Simon Katich was very vocal about how disappointed he was with the way he got out.
“It was very similar to the way he got out a couple of times in the Caribbean, in Barbados in particular.
“It almost just feels like you either give him one more game and say, 'Just go and bat with complete. freedom, it wasn't easy on this pitch'.
“With so much talk about the pitch (being hard to bat on), it might give Cam Green another chance in Sydney.”
Sundaresan’s co-host Tom Morris thinks that selectors might have to be honest with Green and simply drop him off performance.
“It's a big call to make,” Morris added.
“I'm inclined to look at it and go, 'Cam, you're just out of form. We actually can't select you anymore, Beau Webster's ready to go. So we're not going to pick you, and then we'll assess down the track'.
“I don't think there's anything wrong with that either. Similar to last year when Mitch Marsh was dropped for Webster.”
The fifth and final Test between Australia and England begins at the SCG on January 4. Listen to every ball LIVE on SEN - your home of cricket.
