Big game Swan reflects on Norm Smith snub
Lewis Roberts-Thomson was a big game player for Sydney across his 179 games in the red and white.
The utility played in two flags for the club in 2005 and 2012 and was one of the club’s stars on both big days.
In the first of those two flags, Roberts-Thomson played on the much bigger Michael Gardiner, keeping the star Eagle to six touches and two behinds while picking up 17 touches and six marks of his own.
Many consider Roberts-Thomson the best Sydney player from that four-point Grand Final win, but the Norm Smith ultimately went to Chris Judd who had 29 touches and 11 clearances.
While Roberts-Thomson has heard claims he was robbed, he doesn’t see it that way and was happy to leave the MCG with a premiership medal around his neck instead.
“Look, it was a good day at the office,” Roberts-Thomson told This is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.
“I feel like sometimes it’s a bit oversold, I did walk away with a medal at the end of the day, and it was a nice medal.
“There were a lot of Swans who had unheralded great performances and they shined on the big day too.”
Seven years later in 2012, Roberts-Thomson played forward, ruck and defence as the Swans upset the Hawks with 14 touches, a goal, four tackles and seven marks.
He discussed his big game reputation and much more on this week’s episode.
