Daicos sets tongues wagging after following Tassie on Instagram
Collingwood star Nick Daicos sent tongues wagging on Tuesday after following Tasmania on Instagram.
The 23-year-old is contracted with the Magpies until the end of the 2029 season, and while he won’t become a free agent until Tasmania’s third AFL season, he refused to rule out a move south in the future last year.
Now, having followed Tassie on Instagram at their handle @officialtasmaniafc, Daicos again had tongues wagging about a potential move.
As revealed by SEN’s Sam Edmund, the only AFL clubs that Daicos follows on Instagram are the Magpies and Devils.
So, does this mean anything? Edmund and SEN Breakfast co-host Kane Cornes weighed in with their thoughts.
Edmund: “I only had a quick look, and Nick doesn't follow any other AFL teams apart from Collingwood. He only follows Collingwood and now the Tassie Devils.
“What is going on? Even the Premier of the state, Jeremy Rockliff, weighed in on this yesterday.
“It’s one of the best players in the game, following a team that he's already been linked to and won't rule out joining when he becomes a free agent in 2029.
“I need your assessment of this.”
Cornes: “Well, I would think he's doing it innocently.
“But you can't definitively say he has committed to Collingwood for life, in his language.
“If I were a Collingwood fan, I would have wanted just a little bit more, but he would be silly to give them a little bit more, he has to leave that door open.
“As best I can tell, the primary window for signing established players at Tassie is 2027 and 2028
“We do know there's a $5 million pool outside the salary cap available for the first two years.
“His contract until 2029 is problematic. Ideally for him, he'd love to be coming out of contract at the end of 2027, so he could be in the best possible position.
“But I guess he just sits back and sees how Collingwood go over the next couple of years and makes a business decision.
“This is very similar to Gary Ablett (Geelong to Gold Coast) to me, very similar… he’s the most impressive young footballer from start to finish to this point in his career that I've ever seen.
“But there's a business decision to be made like there was for Gary, and I think it'll be a pretty tempting one.”
