Cornes: The key forward that should headline Tassie's wishlist

Mitch Georgiades is ready to propel his game to superstar status, and according to Kane Cornes, he remains perfectly set to be paid as such.
The 24-year-old enters the new season off the back of a career year, booting 58 goals to finish fifth in the Coleman Medal race despite Port Adelaide sinking out of the top eight.
Re-signing with the Power while recovering from an ACL injury in 2023, Georgiades has dominated over his last two seasons, selected in the 2025 All-Australian 44-man squad and representing his home state WA in the AFL’s State of Origin return. Opening his 2026 club campaign, Georgiades booted six against West Coast in the AAMI Community Series, setting himself up for a stellar season ahead of the ball.
In what is an ideal scenario for the key forward, Georgiades' current deal with Port Adelaide will come to a close at the conclusion of the 2027 season, entering restricted free agency if the star chooses not to re-sign.
As Cornes explains, contract expiration in 2027 is the perfect storm, with Tasmania set to hit the ’27 off-season at full tilt ahead of their inaugural season in 2028.
While it hasn’t been floated as yet, Cornes would be shocked if the star man wasn’t topping the Devils’ recruitment board as their AFL planning ramps up.
“On Port Adelaide, Georgiades kicked six,” Cornes told SEN Fireball.
“I haven’t heard Georgiades’ name linked to Tassie because he is from Perth – you’d think if he was going to leave, he’s going to go home.
“2027 is the year that you want to be coming out of contract if you are an AFL player right now. Your value with Tassie coming in – that’s the timeframe.
“Anyone else contracted beyond that – not ideal. That’s why (Nick) Daicos is a story but not a massive one with Tassie.
“What’s the number for Georgiades to get him to Tassie? 58 goals last year, he is in the absolute prime of his career.
“It’d be hard for him to turn his back on $2 million a year in Tassie for five years, wouldn’t it?”
Co-host Sam Edmund said: “He’s been loyal.
“I think that came from the West, when he signed his last contract at Port Adelaide, there was a fair bit of wooing that took place there and he stayed while he was injured.
“He could write his own cheque for the Devils.”
Cornes added: “I’d be surprised if he’s not high up on their list.”
Georgiades and the Power open their season against North Melbourne in Round 1.
