Trade talk: Eagles captain confirms future away from WA
West Coast Eagles captain Oscar Allen has confirmed his intention to leave the club as a free agent.
The star forward sat through an official exit meeting with the Eagles on Friday, confirming his decision to leave club for the Brisbane Lions.
West Coast confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon, releasing this statement:
The West Coast Eagles confirm that Oscar Allen has advised the Club of his intention to explore his options as a restricted free agent.
Head of List Management and Recruiting, Matt Clarke, said the Club would consider its position with the free agency window commencing on Friday, October 3.
“During a respectful and engaging end of season meeting with our coach Andrew McQualter, Head of Football John Worsfold and myself on Friday, Oscar informed us of his intention to explore free agency,” Clarke said.
“As Oscar is a restricted free agent, we retain the right to match any offer made to him by another club and Oscar understands that.
“We will work through the next steps in this process as they unfold, assess our options and make a considered decision.”
The Eagles can now either match the offer sent to Allen by the Lions in order to force a trade, or allow their captain to walk on a free, accepting a compensation draft pick in return.
As it stands, if West Coast opt to accept the compensation, they will land the second overall pick in the upcoming national draft, meaning the Eagles could obtain up to three first round picks given their request for an assistance package.
Allen was drafted by the Eagles with the 21st pick in the 2017 national draft, playing 105 career games and kicking 151 goals.
In 2023, Allen earned a spot in the All-Australian 40-man squad, having kicked 53 goals across his 23 games. Since '23, the 26-year-old has only managed just 23 games, suffering from a knee injury in 2024 followed by a calf and Achilles concern in '25.
