Frankston’s Tom Blamires is hoping to become the VFL’s latest Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medallist to make the jump to the highest level.
The medal, which is awarded to the VFL’s best young talent, was won by Blamires in 2025 after a standout season for the Dolphins in the midfield, and the last 18 winners have gone on to find a spot on an AFL list immediately after.
Previous winners include Bulldog Sam Davidson, Melbourne’s Bayley Fritsch and Fremantle’s Luke Ryan, and Blamires looks every chance to make it 19 from 19 later this year.
The 22-year-old, who works in Collingwood in corporate hospitality, made headlines earlier this season after collecting 44 disposals against his employer, and it’s been rumoured that the Magpies are considering him as a potential draft option.
Blamires also caught the eye of a former Magpie during the VFL finals after playing on Western Bulldogs gun Adam Treloar, who turned out for Footscray.
Treloar was so impressed by the young Dolphin that he texted his manager, Tim Hazell, with detailed tips for him to pass on to Blamires, with Trade Radio’s Josh Gabelich confirming that the Dog has no doubts the youngster has what it takes to play AFL footy.
Blamires himself was blown away by Treloar’s message and he says it reassured him that he could have the tools to make the jump.
“It was unbelievable, to be honest,” Blamires told AFL Trade Radio.
“I kind of just was sitting at work at Collingwood on the Monday or Tuesday, and I got a text from his manager, Tim, which was very nice of him to do.
“He just said, ‘Hey mate, I got this from Adam Treloar’, and it was six to eight dot points of what I'm really good at, and six to eight dot points of what I can improve on.
“Even just getting a text from Adam, let alone in-depth tips from him, it was just unbelievable.
“It just kind of once again reassured me that (I have a chance to make it), if someone like him is putting in the time and effort.”
While he’s yet to speak officially to clubs, Blamires confirmed that he’s received some AFL interest as he looks ahead to what could be an exciting next part of his journey.
“I'm very lucky. There's obviously a little bit (of interest),” Blamires said.
“I haven't really spoken to anyone or gone into that too much depth yet, just because it's all very new to me.
“But I’m looking forward to the next couple of weeks and a couple of months ahead, but I’m not too sure, to be honest.
“I'll wait and see and just embrace it, I reckon.”
Blamires finished the 2025 season for Frankston, averaging 24.5 disposals from 21 matches after moving from defence into the midfield.
