Hawthorn is expecting a crucial return to their defensive stocks ahead of Saturday’s Elimination Final.
21-year-old star Josh Weddle has been absent from the side since Round 16 following the discovery of bone stress in his back, however following a strong stint back in training and a successful return to football via the VFL, the defender is expected to line up for the Hawks in their elimination clash against GWS.
Taking the field for the first time in nine weeks, Weddle featured in Box Hill’s 21-point Qualifying Final loss to Southport, collecting 12 disposals and four marks behind the ball in limited game time.
With the Hawks facing a do-or-die contest away from home, AFL.com.au journalist and SEN regular Josh Gabelich reported that the defender is available and likely to feature on Saturday afternoon.
“He played the second half of the VFL final out at Box Hill on Saturday, got through 40-45 minutes of game time,” Gabelich told SEN Fireball.
“12 touches - didn’t set the world on fire but it wasn’t about that, it was more about how he got through and how he recovered. First game since that stress fracture was discovered after Round 16.
“Internally last week, they just wanted to see if he got through, and if he got through, they were pretty confident they would pick him.
“He’ll be available for selection, and I’d expect to see him out there against the Giants on Saturday.”
Discussing the role he’s expected to play, Gabelich is unsure as to whether coach Sam Mitchell will throw him directly into the back six, however is confident that Weddle is more than prepared for his return.
“He’d be a great sub if they’re erring on the side of caution, but I think he’s done a fair bit of work across the last month,” he continued.
“He’s done a lot of running, so I don’t think it’s a big conditioning concern. They were adamant last week that there is no risk with him and his back.”
Hawthorn will head north this week as they prepare for an elimination battle with the Giants at ENGIE Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
